According to German Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), the terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on Israel is "a declaration of war on the civilized world". "This attack requires a necessary consequence from Israel," Habeck said on Saturday in a video message for the state delegates' assembly of the Rhineland-Palatinate Greens in Saarburg.
"Basically, Hamas must be destroyed, because it is destroying the process of peace in the Middle East."
"The Palestinians also have the right to a state of their own," the minister said. The two-state solution is the right political response. Hamas, however, has no interest in such a solution. "It is not fighting for the Palestinian people to have their own state. She fights for war. It wants to enforce the war and the destruction of Israel, which of course will never take place, but will also bring immeasurable suffering to its own people." Hamas is working "with a big mistaken lie" when it presents its actions as a political offer: "It is not a political offer, it is a declaration of war on the civilized world."
Of course, Israel must confront Hamas, Habeck said. In doing so, Israel is also bound by international law and is obliged to minimize civilian casualties and comply with humanitarian standards. "But that's what they do, or they will do. All diplomatic efforts are aimed at making that happen."
With a video message against anti-Semitism and for solidarity with Israel, Habeck had recently triggered an enormous response and received a lot of encouragement. In the video, which his ministry had distributed on Wednesday evening on X (formerly Twitter), the Green politician denounced anti-Semitic attacks in Germany. He called for "a tough political response" and called on Muslims to distance themselves more clearly from anti-Semitic statements and actions. Dpa
