Fans compared "The Country Doctor's Practice" to "The Mountain Doctor" even before it aired. However, the Sat.1 format has not been able to shine in the ratings battle – until now.
Schliersee – Sat.1 has recently had major problems organizing the afternoon and the evening before. The three-hour live format "Full House" flopped and has since been canceled. After "The Lifesavers", the new programme also includes the series "The Country Doctor's Practice" with Caroline Frier (40), which – at least in terms of ambience – revives "The Mountain Doctor" feelings. The production has not yet been able to achieve a success in its ratings. All the greater was the surprise on Friday afternoon (November 3, 2023): "The Country Doctor's Practice" set a record.
Upswing for Sat.1? "The Country Doctor's Practice" sets a new record for quotas
"The Mountain Doctor" star Hans Sigl (54) had recently already made it clear: "Mountain Doctor" and "Country Doctor's Practice" do not have much in common. The TV actor doesn't think much of comparisons between the two series. Nevertheless, many fans think that the rural setting, in which Caroline Frier and Hans Sigl each act as doctors, fringe stories and individual cases are likely to appeal to a similar group of viewers. So far, however, the Sat.1 series has not really been able to compete with the cult format on ZDF. Is that changing now?

Even though the ratings of "The Country Doctor's Practice" have remained constant in recent weeks, the format had not yet made it to the channel average. According to dwdl.de, a small success could then be celebrated on Thursday (November 2, 2023). With a market share of 4.9 percent, things were already doing much better than before. Towards the weekend, the Friday episode was able to go one better: With a market share of 6.5 percent, not only was a new record set – "The Country Doctor's Practice" was also on a channel level for the first time.

Since 2008, "The Mountain Doctor" with Hans Sigl has been an integral part of ZDF. But in the case of the doctor series, it is actually a new edition of an Austrian format of the same name, which was on the air until 1997. The first broadcast took place on Sat.1 – and with great success.
Competition for "The Mountain Doctor"? Cult format regularly secures top ratings
However, the two formats should not really get in each other's way in the TV program. Although it is not yet known when exactly the 17th season of "The Mountain Doctor" will start, the format with Hans Sigl is usually broadcast in primetime. "The Country Doctor's Practice", on the other hand, runs from 19 p.m. As of today, however, fans can look forward to the repetition of old "Bergdoktor" episodes in the Saturday evening program. Even then, there is no overlap between country doctor and mountain doctor – direct quota comparisons can still be made.
