The news of Kessler's death came at a time when in New York some ten thousand participants showed up for a huge show of support for Israel initiated by the Jewish Federation of New York (UJA). Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, spoke at the event alongside Federation Director General Arik Goldstein. Idan Raichel opened the event with his song "Depths" and the large crowd called for the return of the Israeli prisoners in Gaza.
