The Russian Foreign Ministry strongly criticized Israel on Tuesday morning following a statement by Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu regarding the possibility of a nuclear attack in the Gaza Strip.
"The minister's remarks raised some questions," Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said at a daily media briefing in Moscow. "Israel appears to admit that it possesses nuclear weapons," the spokeswoman continued. Zakharosa said her country was "very concerned" about the remarks, implicitly comparing Israel's nuclear program to that of Iran.

"If this is true, where are the International Atomic Energy Agency and the international nuclear inspectors?" asked Zakharova. Russia itself tested several intercontinental ballistic missiles over the weekend, and last week Kremlin-linked officials released a video showing a simulated nuclear attack on U.S. cities.
Minister Amichai Eliyahu was asked during a morning program on the Kol Barama network about a nuclear attack on the Gaza Strip and replied that it was "one of the possibilities." Eliyahu was suspended from government meetings and his remarks drew many condemnations in Israel and around the world.
Iran also addressed the matter. Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Hossein Abdollahian said: "The UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency must take immediate action to disarm this barbaric apartheid regime as soon as possible."
