Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi, who asked Netanyahu to hold the meeting more than a week ago, said: "We want to see an unequivocal victory over Hamas and we want to see the IDF there. We hear people talking about Barghouti and the Palestinian Authority. It's delusional if we go back to it – we didn't understand what happened here."
He added that "the war will end when the IDF defeats Hamas and Jihad and the state returns all the abductees to our territory. Even then, Israel must remain there and control the Gaza Strip security, so that there will be no threat to Sderot, the envelope and all the southern communities, and our residents will be able to return quietly and safely to their homes."
He also said that the coming months should already be planned for the continued growth of the city of Sderot and the doubling and return of residents to their homes, after the threat from Gaza is removed.
Netanyahu told those present: "We will not forget who was in Gaza before Hamas. The IDF will not rely on anyone, only the IDF will hold the Gaza Strip." In addition, he promised to help with everything required.
The Prime Minister's Office said that in today's meeting, Netanyahu told the heads of the local authorities in the Gaza Strip that: "There will be comprehensive Israeli security control over the Gaza Strip, including full demilitarization, to ensure that there will no longer be a threat from Gaza to Israeli citizens."
