Leiter, a revered officer, who served as a company commander in the Kingfisher, was discharged, went to medical school at the age of 33 and was about to begin an internship at the hospital soon. Despite his difficult and demanding medical studies, he continued to serve in the reserves as a company commander in the 697th Battalion in the 551st Paratroopers Brigade and recently completed a battalion commander course.
Leiter, 39, was born in Old Hebron, the eldest of eight children of Yechiel and Hani, and grew up in the community of Ali in Binyamin. He left behind a wife and six children, the youngest of whom was less than three months old.
