While Canada supports Israel's right to defend itself after a surprise attack by Hamas, the country's prime minister from North America, Justin Trudeau harshly criticizes Israel, saying that "the killing of women, children, babies in besieged Gaza must end."
Trudeau, who last week called for a humanitarian pause to allow the release of all hostages and provide enough assistance to meet civilian needs, told a news conference: "I call on the Israeli government to exercise maximum restraint. The world is watching, on TV, on social media – we hear testimonies from doctors, family members, survivors, children who lost their parents," he said. "The world is witnessing this killing of women, of children, of babies. This has to stop."
Trudeau also did not spare criticism from Hamas, saying that he "needs to stop using the Palestinians as human shields and must release all his hostages." The Canadian prime minister noted that "about 350 Canadian citizens, permanent residents and family members have been evacuated from Gaza."
