Transformation in sight for public lighting in Orléans. The city has decided to switch all of its lights to LEDs, for more sobriety since this type of lamp is much less energy-intensive. "This will reduce consumption by about 60%," the local authority hopes. The bill will therefore be considerably reduced, and the modernization of the lighting will also have the advantage of limiting light dispersion, which is harmful to the environment, without reducing the brightness for passers-by.

This program began at the end of October with the old center, in the heart of the city, with the planned replacement of 750 light bulbs. The lamps have already been changed on Rue Royale, and this work, which amounts to 325,000 euros, will continue for four months to equip the entire district.

Savings also by delaying Christmas lights

The rest of the operation will then be spread over time, in several phases. The next one, in 2024, will involve the replacement of the luminaires on tram line A, i.e. 170 light points. For the time being, only 25% of the city's fleet is equipped with LEDs, with very contrasting situations depending on the municipality. To get to 100%, a total of 45,000 light bulbs will have to be changed, the goal being to achieve this "as quickly as possible," adds the municipality.

Last year, Orléans had already embarked on the path of savings by deciding to switch off part of the public lighting from midnight, a measure that makes it possible to make "about 30% savings". The city has also decided to delay the start of the holiday illuminations by a few days, which has been set for December 2.
