Intense shelling in the Gaza Strip after the end of the truce
The Israeli army shelled the Gaza Strip on Saturday for the second day in a row since the expiration of a truce with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas that had allowed the release of hostages and the delivery of emergency aid.
The health ministry of Hamas, the ruling movement in the besieged Palestinian territory, reported nearly 200 deaths in the Israeli strikes on Friday. "We are currently striking Hamas military targets throughout the Gaza Strip," Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, said early Saturday.
