The truce in the Gaza Strip, which has lasted for almost a week, has brought relief to Palestinian civilians and allowed for the release of Israeli hostages. But it has led Israel into a dead end into which, for more than 7 days, Hamas has been trying to lead it, skilfully using violence and cynicism. By releasing its hostages in dribs and drabs, the Islamist movement, which was said to be out of breath before the October <> terrorist attack, is proving that it has kept control of the situation despite fighting of unprecedented intensity in the Gaza Strip, a territory that has been severely tested in the past.
In doing so, Hamas is forcing Israel to withhold its strength. The release of the hostages has become a major political issue on the Israeli domestic scene. Society is united behind the families of the hostages to demand that the government release all Israelis, men and women, civilians and soldiers. The next day...
