In addition to Russia's deaths in the fighting in the Ukraine war, there are probably more than 300,000 wounded. The Kremlin is tight-lipped about numbers.

London – About 70,000 Russians have been killed in the Ukraine war so far, according to British estimates. These are 50,000 regular soldiers and 20,000 members of the Wagner Group, the British Ministry of Defense announced on Monday (4 December).

The number of wounded between the start of the war on February 24, 2022 and the end of November 2023 is estimated in London at 180,000 to 240,000 soldiers and 40,000 Wagner mercenaries. "This gives an estimated total range of 290,000 to 350,000 casualties among Russian combatants. The average of the estimate is a total of 320,000 Russian victims," it added.

It is difficult to provide precise information. Even in Russia, the total number of dead and wounded is probably unknown, as there is an established culture of dishonest reporting within the military. The authority did not provide any information on Ukrainian losses.

Russia's losses in the war reportedly higher than Ukraine's

According to NATO estimates from the end of November, the number of Russian soldiers killed or wounded has exceeded the 300,000 mark. In the summer, the New York Times, citing U.S. government officials, reported 120,000 Russian soldiers killed and 170,000 to 180,000 wounded. For Ukraine, they spoke of about 70,000 soldiers killed and 100,000 to 120,000 injured.

The British Ministry of Defense has been publishing daily information on the course of the war since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine. The government with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin accuses London of disinformation.

No new wave of recruitment in Russia before the election?

Last month, British intelligence experts also reported that they believe a new wave of Russian recruitment is unlikely before the 2024 Russian election. The Kremlin will try to minimize unpopular measures until the presidential election scheduled for March 17, it said.

Putin has so far kept a low profile as to whether he wants to run again in the election in March. In September, he had declared that he wanted to postpone the announcement of a possible candidacy "until the end of the year". If he stands for election, his re-election is considered assured, as the main figures of the opposition are either in prison or in exile. Re-election would secure Putin's power in the Kremlin until 2030. (dpa/AFP/frs)
