The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, spoke out strongly against Israel on Tuesday, breaking from the restrained line he has taken so far with regard to Israel, due to his country's status as a mediator between Israel and Hamas.
The Emir made the remarks at a conference of the Gulf Cooperation Council attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. "Israel must understand that the era of occupation is over. The occupation authorities in occupied Palestine violate human rights on a regular basis."
Israel's ruler called on the United Nations Security Council to oblige Israel to return to the negotiating table. "It is a shame for the international community that it continues to allow these despicable crimes against humanity for almost two months, during which time the indiscriminate and deliberate killing of civilians continues, all for the killing of women and children," the Gulf statesman said.
"There is no alternative to negotiating a permanent ceasefire," the Qatari leader said, echoing the Hamas terror group's demand to discuss only a long-term ceasefire following the collapse of a lull in fighting aimed at the release of the hostages last week.
