Staff Sgt. (res.) Eyal Meir Berkowitz, 28, from Jerusalem, a soldier in Battalion 699, the "Half Fire" Brigade (551), who fell yesterday in battle in the northern Gaza Strip, will be laid to rest this morning (Friday) at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl.

Yochai Damri, head of the Mount Hebron Regional Council, wrote on his Facebook page: "Blessed is the Dayan of truth. The Mount Hebron Regional Council announces with great pain and sorrow the passing of First Sergeant Eyal Meir Berkowitz, son of Riki and Shmaya Berkowitz from Susya. Riki is the principal of the regional school in Susiya. We share the family's deep sorrow."

Ari Odes wrote on Facebook: "To the Berkowitz family, dear Riki and Shemaiah, the Sharabi and Mansour families and the entire Susya family. With you in your heavy mourning over the fall of Eyal Meir. Eyal inherited from home the consciousness of mission and devotion to the common good, and unfortunately also realized it in his death. We will draw strength from his character and heroism and we will do everything so that the children of Mount Hebron will grow up in light of his heritage and in light of the legacy of the other fallen on the Mount. On behalf of all the inhabitants of the mountain, I send you a warm and loving hug.
