Representatives of the MAG Corps met yesterday with the family of Yuval Doron Castleman, who was shot dead by Aviad Freija after neutralizing the terrorists who carried out the attack in Jerusalem, and presented them with the main developments in the investigation. Following the latest information brought to the attention of the family, they expressed their agreement today (Friday) to open the grave.

The military police, accompanied by the military prosecution, worked to conduct additional examinations with relevant professionals, from which new and relevant information emerged. Based on this information, it was found that there is an investigative benefit in conducting an autopsy. Upon receiving the position and examining all the relevant data, the military police, the investigator and the military prosecution acted to open the grave in order to transfer the body to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy. For this purpose, a court order was requested and obtained.

The police released Castleman's body without it being examined at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Abu Kabir. This decision created a legal difficulty, according to the ICC's Vice President, Lieutenant Colonel Toby Hart: "It is highly doubtful whether it will be possible to determine beyond a reasonable doubt at what stage the deceased suffered injuries that would have led to his eventual death." On the other hand, the military prosecutor argued that "there was no evidentiary reason for performing the autopsy," adding that he did not believe "that this affects the question of the possibility of proving a causal relationship." The judge insisted that the autopsy could determine criminal findings: "Do you know of cases where criminal findings can be made without an autopsy?" he asked. The military prosecutor replied: "I don't know of many cases in which they shot at people who raised their hands."
