Only 1% of the 1,301 respondents said they support the Palestinians. 18% responded that they support both sides equally. 12% had trouble answering.
"It is clear that the government needs to maintain certain diplomatic frameworks with Muslim countries," said the institute's deputy director, Anton Hrushetsky. "However, the fact that Ukrainians are more supportive of Israel entails a moral choice. The choice is in the free democratic world against the world of terror in the style of the Middle Ages."
The findings in Ukraine stand in stark contrast to the findings of a similar survey in Russia. A poll conducted at the end of October by the Moscow Levada Center found that 21% of Russian citizens support the Palestinians (up from 14% in June this year), compared with 6% who support Israel (down from 9% in June). 66% don't care about either side.
Not surprisingly, given the pro-Palestinian narratives in the state media, the Palestinians who follow the news are more supportive – 41% (compared to 21% of the general population). Among devout news consumers in Russia, 8% support Israel.
By comparison, a poll conducted at the end of November for NPR and PBS found that 61 percent of Americans support Israel, compared to 30 percent who support the Palestinians. A YouGov poll for The Economist also posed the possibility of equal support on both sides. It was found that 38% of Americans support Israel, 11% support the Palestinians, and 28% support both sides.

A YouGov poll conducted on Tuesday in Britain provided ambivalent findings about British perceptions of responsibility for the conflict. In response to the question of who is responsible for the current conflict between Israel and Gaza, 6% pointed to Israel as solely responsible. 12% thought Israel was more responsible than Hamas. 22% blamed both sides equally. 17% believe the terrorist organization is more responsible, and 16% say it is solely responsible.
