US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the establishment of an international operation to secure navigation in the Red Sea in the wake of the Houthi threat. Austin is on his way to Bahrain, where the U.S. Navy is headquartered in the Middle East. He said the member states would include, besides the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Bahrain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain.
He added that the countries would operate joint patrols in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. As reported in the US, Austin announced that the name of the operation would be "Guardian of Prosperity".
Earlier, Egyptian sources told the newspaper Al-Arabi Al-Jadid that Egypt does not intend to participate in the international force, even though Houthi attacks in the Red Sea also threaten navigation through the Suez Canal. This canal is an important pillar of Egypt's economy. The sources said that Egypt prefers the diplomatic path and there is an exchange of messages between Cairo, Iran and the Houthis.
