The possibility would be on the table again, even if the conditions have changed. Egyptian sources said Sunday that Israel and Hamas were ready to discuss a new ceasefire, which would be accompanied by the release of hostages and prisoners. The day before, Qatar had confirmed that "diplomatic efforts" were underway.

A further step in this direction was taken in Poland, where David Barnea, the head of the Mossad (the Jewish state's intelligence service), William Burns, the director of the CIA, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, the Qatari prime minister — also in charge of foreign affairs — met, according to the Israeli press. "We sense a desire on both sides to reach a ceasefire, to exchange prisoners and detainees ... and stop the war," an Egyptian security source told AFP on Monday. This is a sign that the negotiations are accelerating.
