A parent of a student on Wednesday punched a social worker at a middle school in Sarcelles (Val-d'Oise), AFP learned from police sources and the rectorate. At around 11:30 a.m., the father of a student at the school went to the Jean Lurçat middle school and "reproached a social worker for not having been informed of a report made to the prosecutor," the rectorate told AFP.

This report led last week to an order for the temporary placement of her child in a socio-educational home, according to a police source. During the discussion, the 56-year-old student's parent hit the social worker, particularly in the face and arm. A nurse then intervened and had to dodge blows from a chair. Police were called to the scene and subdued the man and arrested him in front of students. He was taken into custody at the Sarcelles police station.

Complaint

After being taken to the emergency room in Gonesse by the fire brigade for minor injuries, the social worker filed a complaint, as did the Ministry of Education. The school nurse was not injured. "The ministry expresses its full support for the social worker who was attacked and for the entire educational community of the Jean Lurçat college," the Versailles education authority told AFP. A listening unit has been offered to all staff.

Physical and verbal attacks on school staff have come under increased scrutiny since the October 13 jihadist attack in Arras, in which a radicalized former student stabbed French teacher Dominique Bernard to death outside his middle school.
