On Friday evening, the Security Council approved a proposal to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. Thirteen countries voted in favor of the resolution, the United States and Russia abstained.
Before the vote, Russia proposed an amendment to the draft resolution that included the addition of a sentence calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Ten countries voted in favor of the Russian amendment, but the United States vetoed it and it was shelved. The United States also included a clause in the resolution requiring hostages held by Hamas to be released, and that humanitarian organizations should be allowed access to them, especially for medical examinations.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield pointed to the resolution wearing a bracelet she received last week from the daughter of one of the Israeli abductees in the Gaza Strip, with whom she met in New York.
