The fighting in the northern Gaza Strip took a heavy toll on the IDF and the 13th Battalion in particular, with nine soldiers and officers falling in a deadly battle in the Sajaiya neighborhood.

The incident in which the nine soldiers were killed occurred when, during a cleanup in a crowded area between houses, an IDF force was shot at from one of the houses, and an IED was activated. The force returned fire at the source of the fire, and as a result of the detonation of the IED, a separation was created between the forces and a rescue process began. Another force that arrived at the scene entered the building. A second IED was then detonated, claiming the lives of other fighters.

Those killed in the terrible incident were Col. Yitzhak Ben Basht, who was killed while serving in the Golani Brigade Commander's Command; Golani Brigade 13th Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Tomer Greenberg; Major Roy Maldassi, company commander in the 13th Battalion; Major Moshe Avraham Bar-On, company commander in the 51st Battalion; Capt. Liel Hayu, Acting B-51; Sergeant Eran Aloni, a soldier in the 51st, and the sergeant of her brother Daskal, a soldier in the 51st. Two 669 fighters were also killed in the incident: Maj. Ben Shelly and Sergeant Col. Rom Hecht. In another incident, Staff Sgt. Uriah Yaakov, a soldier in the 614th Battalion at the School of Combat Engineering, was killed.
