The Foreign Ministry informed Cyprus and Britain that it approved in principle the establishment of a humanitarian maritime corridor through which supplies and equipment would be transferred to the Gaza Strip in the future. Foreign Minister Eli Cohen conveyed a positive message on the matter to the foreign ministers of both countries on Tuesday. The update states that as far as Israel is concerned, it will be possible to begin operating the humanitarian maritime corridor between Cyprus and the Gaza Strip, when the preparations and demands are completed.

The initiative to establish the maritime corridor was proposed by Greece and Cyprus at the beginning of the war, after Israel announced that it would no longer be responsible for civilian life in the Gaza Strip. In response, a number of proposals were made to Jerusalem regarding possible solutions to the issue, and Foreign Minister Cohen decided to promote the proposal because it seemed to be the most feasible of the ideas that arose.

Last week, Cohen visited Larnaca Port. Together with his colleague, Konstantinos Kombos, he surveyed the ZENON multipurpose coordination center, which is expected to be the starting point of the maritime corridor. This center will also carry out the security check of goods in coordination with Israel. According to the plan, the equipment passing through the corridor will be inspected under Israeli supervision in Cyprus and will pass directly by sea to its anchorage in Mawasi in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to Foreign Minister Cohen, "The creation of a maritime corridor aims to completely disconnect economically from Gaza. We will not allow a return to the reality that preceded the murderous terrorist attacks of October 7. In recent weeks, the Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with various entities in Israel, Cyprus and other countries, has promoted the establishment of the maritime corridor. The corridor will be subject to security checks on the goods in coordination with Israel and their transfer by sea to the Gaza Strip."
