The saga of when municipal elections will be held continues: At a cabinet meeting held today (Wednesday) regarding the date of municipal elections, the government unanimously approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's compromise proposal.

Natinhu instructed the IDF to convey to the Cabinet Secretariat by tomorrow, at 14:00 P.M., its position regarding the possibility of releasing 2189 candidates for local elections who are currently on active reserve duty, which of them cannot be released, and a precise breakdown of which authorities have candidates who cannot be released.

This Sunday, December 31, the government will hold a follow-up discussion with full data from the IDF and will decide on the date of the elections.

As you may recall, about 14 plaintiffs who are running for the position of head of the authority or for the council of the authority and who simultaneously serve in active reserve duty have approached the High Court of Justice on the matter. They claim that the elections cannot be held on the scheduled date (after it has already been postponed once every three months - from the end of October this year) and they claim that as of today, in the current situation, their ability to run and be elected is impaired. Some of the petitioners want to postpone the elections to February 27, while others want to postpone them for 90 days from the moment the end of the war is declared.

A few days ago, it was revealed that almost 4,000 reservists are running in the elections. Among the petitioners are senior reserve officers such as Lt. Col. (res.) Eldar Sivan who serves in the 162nd Division, Col. (res.) Amir Ellenberg who serves in the north, Lt. Col. (res.) Lavi Zamir who serves as a Nahal brigade sergeant, Yaron Rosenthal a combat soldier in the 55th Battalion and more.
