The emotional toll of the war: A regular soldier who was refreshed with his fellow paratroopers at a vacation facility in Ashkelon woke up in the middle of the night and began firing bursts of his personal weapon in the corridor of the compound where they lived. Fortunately, there were no casualties, except for a very minor injury to one of the commanders as a result of shattered glass, and the soldier's friends overpowered him and calmed him down. Later in the evening, the soldier was sent for examination and treatment. It should be noted that the incident was not reported by the military, and the source of the information is in a letter sent Wednesday morning by the battalion commander in the unit's parent group.
Immediate therapeutic envelope
The IDF monitors the mental state of the fighters in the Gaza Strip, and the Ministry of Defense has also established teams designed to provide a psychological response to soldiers wounded in battle. The prevailing opinion among professionals is that it is important that those who have been emotionally injured return to their activities and units as soon as possible, since returning to the unit is the best way to cope with the trauma. But there are soldiers whose condition is more serious, and they do not return to combat but receive immediate treatment.
An IDF spokesperson said in response: "The commanders accompany the fighters alongside medical personnel and ensure appropriate treatment for each soldier. The incident took place during a refreshment of forces from the fighting in Gaza. Several soldiers sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and were treated. For reasons of privacy we cannot elaborate on the soldier's condition, and we ask that his privacy be respected. The incident was reported to the Military Police Investigation Unit, which opened an investigation. In light of the soldier's medical condition, he has not yet been interrogated. The investigation will be conducted when possible at the discretion of the medical authorities."
