"An open letter to our ultra-Orthodox sisters," they write. "These words are written with a trembling hand and a heavy heart. We, mothers and wives of soldiers in compulsory and reserve service, turn to you, mothers of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students: Call on your sons to enlist in the IDF. We know that many of you have been pained with us by the pain of bereavement and fallen over the years, especially during the difficult days since Simchat Torah.

"Over the past two months, we have seen help and solidarity efforts by ultra-Orthodox women in a variety of ways to help evacuees' families and fallen families. We know that many of you are praying for the soldiers, for the healing of the wounded and for the return of the abductees. We are also aware that you, as a whole in ultra-Orthodox society, attach great importance to Torah study and see it as a supreme value and even help preserve the people of Israel. But none of this can replace conscription into the IDF. This is the Jewish, moral and civic duty of anyone who wishes to live here. Its non-existence is a distinction between blood and blood. This reality is no longer tolerated."
