Highlights: According to dietitian Kaylee Bensley, cooked rice should be consumed up to two days after preparation. Lettuce can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 30 days – if you place it in a kind of mop to cover it. Hard boiled eggs can carry bacteria like salmonella or listeria if they're not cooked properly. To keep them fresh, put them in a glass with a little water to keep it moist. To kill it, wash the fruit with vinegar and water and put it deep in the fridge.

Who among us hasn't opened the refrigerator to look for something to eat, and found something that couldn't be eaten? Do you want to avoid such incidents in the future? Here are the recommendations to help you do it right

Even if you've already taken the plunge and stored some foods in the fridge, that doesn't mean they will never go bad – and let's face it, it's very disappointing to open his door and discover that something we really wanted to eat went wrong a few days ago.

To avoid such incidents in the future, we've included recommendations for when to leave certain foods in the refrigerator before they spoil. Go ahead and take notes!

Boiled rice

According to dietitian Kaylee Bensley, who founded Sulinu for feeding treatment, cooked rice should be consumed up to two days after preparation, as opposed to 6-4 days recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "This is because cooked rice has bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal disease," she said. "This bacteria has the ability to withstand high heat and does not die when cooking, so it can develop when the food it is in gets cold or is in a place that is not warm enough, one that does not withstand temperatures of 4 to 60 degrees Celsius.

lettuce

"This vegetable has a lot of fluid, and the more it fills, the more likely it is to leave the lettuce cells and enter its bacterial cells," Bensley said. However, lettuce can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 30 days – if you place it in a kind of mop to cover it.

Hard boiled eggs

Did you boil eggs until they hardened? In this situation, you can eat them up to a week after boiling them. "They can carry bacteria like salmonella or listeria if they're not cooked properly, so it's a good idea to remove their shell before consuming them," Bensley said.

According to nutritionist and wellness expert Edita Lang, kale (the official name of kale) can survive in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To keep them fresh, put them in a glass with a little water to keep it moist.

watermelon

The secret to maintaining the longevity of the sweet fruit is not to cut it and then put it in the refrigerator, but to cut it only when you want to eat it – otherwise, it will spoil within a few days. "Once you cut the watermelon, it spoils quickly because the water in it slowly evaporates, so it also loses its sweet taste," Bensley said.

Still, if you cut watermelon and put it in the refrigerator, it is recommended to consume it for up to 5 days at most.

Organic Osana

First of all, don't get confused – this is not a blackberry, not a berry in itself that is very similar to the popular fruit. And for our purposes: because Osana has a lot of water and its "skin" is very thin, there is quite a chance that bacteria will develop in it, says Bensley. To kill it, wash the fruit with vinegar and water and put it deep in the refrigerator.

Canned fish

Everyone knows that cans have a very long shelf life, but if you open one – it's a completely different story. "Once you open a can, you expose its contents to air, bacteria and enzyme reactions, so its shelf life is instantly shortened to a few days, which is especially true for canned fish," Bensley explains.
