Highlights: Cabinet meeting to discuss extending term of IPS commissioner. Meeting also to discuss postponement of local elections. Israel's prime minister says he will recommend postponing elections to end of February. The meeting is the first to take place since the Six Day's offensive in Gaza. It will be followed by a vote on whether to extend the term of the IPS commissioner, who has been in place since 2007. The vote is expected to be held by the end of the week, if not earlier.

Among the issues that will be discussed at the meeting: extending the term of the IPS commissioner and postponing the local elections Finance Minister Smotrich said: "This morning it will be decided whether to disconnect from the people and turn our backs on the hundreds of thousands of reservists, or to be attentive and connected to them."

The government is convening on Sunday for a crucial discussion on whether local elections should be postponed. On previous occasions, camp ministers did not show up for the meeting. Today, Minister Hili Tropper arrived to submit a request to extend the term of IPS Commissioner Kathy Perry.

Ben-Gvir's environs said that "the authority to extend or replace the commissioner's term is only within the minister's authority, and he does not intend to keep the commissioner in the position." At the same time, efforts are underway behind the scenes to find an agreed-upon solution.

At the beginning of the cabinet meeting, Minister Ofir Akunis said: "The place to decide on the day after is the cabinet plenum. Every political matter, according to Jewish tradition, is brought to the cabinet plenum. Starting with the glorious victory in the Six Days, the Oslo Accords and the disengagement, everything political reaches the cabinet plenum. In the end, the decisions fall only in one place."

Minister Nir Barkat said at the entrance to the cabinet meeting: "This morning as well, Hamas has 133 abducted Israelis. While they are there, the State of Israel continues to transfer goods and fuel to Gaza. With one hand the state fights Hamas and with the other hand sends hundreds of trucks every day, enabling the terrorist organization to continue fighting our soldiers. This is absurd. There has never been a case in history of a country that fought an enemy country and supplied it with fuel and goods. This thing must stop today."

"We are not leaving the government on the IPS commissioner"

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir insists on replacing Perry, while the state camp is demanding that the agreement they signed when they entered the emergency government be honored, so that no senior appointments will be made during this period.

MK Matan Kahane of Gantz's faction said this morning that there is no danger to the integrity of the government: "I don't see us leaving the government on the IPS commissioner. There are more important things than how Itamar Ben-Gvir runs his office."

Last week, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced that he had decided not to extend the term of IPS Commissioner Kathy Perry. In response, the official camp attacked the fact that this was a "blow to state security" and demanded that the prime minister intervene and ensure the existence of the coalition agreement prohibiting the appointment of senior officials during the campaign.

In addition, at today's meeting, a discussion will be held regarding the postponement of the date of the local elections. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich appealed to the chairman of the state camp, Minister Benny Gantz, and Likud ministers to support the postponement, following Prime Minister Netanyahu's remarks last night, who said he would recommend a postponement.

"This morning you will have to decide whether to disconnect from the people and turn your back on the hundreds of thousands of reservists and their millions of family members, or be attentive and connected to them," Smotrich said.
