Highlights: The Mediterranean Sea level is expected to rise by 2.4 meters by 2100. The increase is mainly due to the increase in the volume of water due to its warming and the melting of terrestrial and marine glaciers. The dangers of rising sea levels are varied, including damage to buildings and infrastructure, salinization of aquifers, increase in drainage base, erosion of coastline and cliffs, and flooding of land areas, especially during storms. The report summarizes the orderly process led by the Ministry of Environmental Protection within the framework of the Climate Change Preparedness Administration.

A report by the Ministry of Environmental Protection describes the expected future scenario in Israel • According to which the increase is mainly due to the increase in the volume of water, due to melting glaciers • Dangers: damage to infrastructure and buildings, erosion of the law line and flooding during a storm

The Ministry of Environmental Protection today (Monday) published the preparedness report for sea level rise by the Climate Change Preparedness Administration. According to the report, the scenario is that by 2100 the Mediterranean coast will rise by 1.06 meters above the zero line. In the event of extreme storm events during this period, an additional increase of another 0.8 meters is possible.

According to the report, the reference scenario based on the latest IPCC Intergovernmental Panel report (SSP5-8.5), the scenario speaks of rising water levels and is one of the phenomena that will affect Israel. It is mainly due to the increase in the volume of water due to its warming and the melting of terrestrial and marine glaciers. The dangers of rising sea levels are varied, including damage to buildings and infrastructure, salinization of aquifers, increase in drainage base, erosion of coastline and cliffs, and flooding of land areas, especially during storms. This trend of sea level rise and its predicted effects require Israel to incorporate the heavy implications in infrastructure planning and the various uses along the coast.

The Secretariat's recommendation is to carry out an orderly risk management procedure to update the reference scenario, measure sea level rise lines, and formulate a forecast for the expected rise in the Red Sea as well.

"The State of Israel is a coastal country with significant population growth, which is developing and building infrastructure and housing throughout the country and along the shores of the Mediterranean. This is what Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman said. "Therefore, we must prepare and plan our future and the future of our children hand in hand with science and the scenarios expected as a result of climate change. The report summarizes the orderly process led by the Ministry of Environmental Protection within the framework of the Climate Change Preparedness Administration."
