National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is expected to submit his recommendation to extend the police commissioner's term by six months for government approval on Sunday. The state camp clarified that this was not coordinated with them. Chairman Benny Gantz has made it clear several times that he expects the Likud to abide by the unity agreement signed with him and to extend the terms of police commissioner and prison service commissioner during the war.
Last week, the official camp clarified in response to Ben-Gvir's announcement that he had decided to extend the term of Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai by six months that "the continuation of the term of the police commissioner throughout the war is critical to Israel's security. The prime minister is expected to do the same with regard to all senior officials in the country, with an emphasis on security officials."
Ben-Gvir has made it clear in the past that he is not bound by the unity agreement signed between the Likud and the state camp, and unilaterally announced that he does not intend to extend the term of the IPS commissioner, while on the other hand, as stated, he wants to extend the term of the police commissioner by six months.

In place of the IPS commissioner, Ben-Gvir intends to appoint his acting security secretary, Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi, claiming that he is "the right person to lead the IPS at this time" – at a time when Commissioner Yaakobi has no professional background in the field of incarceration.
Last month, the state camp stressed that Minister Hili Tropper had submitted to the Cabinet Secretariat a proposal to extend the appointments of the two senior officials – the IPS commissioner and the police commissioner – and called on the prime minister and ministers to support the proposal.
The Likud announced that it understood Ben-Gvir's difficulty in working with an IPS commissioner who is subordinate to him, after she spoke out personally and publicly against him – in contrast to the fact that on the one-year anniversary of the government's term, Ben-Gvir and the police commissioner did not stop attacking each other on various issues, culminating in the leak of a personal conversation between the two. Police reacted exceptionally to the publication. In a statement, the police said: "They are shocked that the minister and his office are recording personal conversations between the minister and the police commissioner, and are outraged at taking things out of context in a conversation that dealt with behavior patterns in Arab society, which does not reveal the identity of the murderers even when the relatives of the victims are known. This conduct casts doubt on the ability of the police to report to the minister without fear of exposing sources and distorting the conversations."
