Rosalie Silverman Abella, a Canadian Supreme Court justice and world-renowned expert on the laws of war, spoke out strongly against the proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Thursday.

Abella, a professor at Harvard Law School and a former Supreme Court of Canada judge who is the daughter of Holocaust survivors, wrote that the hearings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague are "an insult to the meaning of genocide."

"The case against Israel represents a cynical and outrageous abuse of the principles behind the international legal order established after World War II," Abela wrote in a communiqué published following the start of today's proceedings and quoted in the British Jewish Chronicle.

"Hamas' explicit and unapologetic goal is the extermination of Jews. That is why Hamas murdered, raped, beheaded, kidnapped and tortured Jews in the October 7 massacre. With the aim of exterminating them, because they are Jews. It is absurd that it is fatty to claim that a country defending itself against genocide is guilty of genocide," the judge wrote.
