Natalie was photographed at several events without the ring on her finger, including at the recent Golden Globe Awards, which she also attended without a leaf. According to a report in French newspaper Voici, the Oscar winner and 46-year-old choreographer split after 11 years of marriage last summer after Benjamin allegedly had an affair with a 25-year-old climate activist known in the French public, Camille Étienne. On June 7, the couple were photographed together looking happy and happy at the French Open, but a few days later, Natalie was seen wiping away tears on a bench while in the park with Benjamin and their children, 12-year-old Alf and 5-year-old Amalia. People magazine reported at the time that Benjamin's extramarital affair was short-lived and that he apologized to his wife.

Ahead of her appearance at the Governor's Awards, Portman sparked a debate online about the breakdown of her marriage following an interview she gave to The Wall Street Journal in which she made no reference to Benjamin. The interview took place at her home in Paris, where the family moved when Benjamin was appointed director of dance at the National Opera, a position he held for two years. The two met in 2009 while filming the dark drama Black Swan. At the time, he dated and lived with a professional dancer, Isabella Boylston, although their relationship soon ended.
