According to the Wall Street Journal, Israel informed Egypt on Saturday that it planned to carry out a special military operation along the Philadelphi route.
The operation will likely include withdrawing Palestinian officials from the area and stationing Israeli forces along the route from the southeastern corner, which forms a triangle of borders between Israel, Gaza and Egypt to the more western border of Gaza and Egypt.

According to the report, Israel is pushing for control of the route in order to thwart attempts to smuggle weapons for terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip and to prevent Hamas terrorists from fleeing from the Gaza Strip. "The Philadelphi axis should be in our hands," Netanyahu said in a statement to the media two weeks ago. "It is clear that any other arrangement will not guarantee the disarmament that we want."
