The Italian ski racer Sofia Goggia has seriously injured her knee and is missing the upcoming World Cup in her home country.
After the Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was canceled on Sunday due to fog, the downhill Olympic champion and her teammates drove on a slope parallel to the racetrack.
She fell and suffered a knee injury.
An in-depth examination in Milan revealed that the 28-year-old suffered a fracture of the tibia head in the right knee, as the Italian Ski Association announced in the evening.
"Goggia will not take part in the World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo, which start on Monday, February 8," it said.
As the current best downhill skier, Goggia was one of the Italians' greatest hopes for the title fights.
This winter she won four out of five runs and came second once.
As the first competition in the Dolomites, the combination is on next Monday.
It is not Goggia's first serious injury: Last year she suffered a broken forearm in a fall in the Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
