A public discussion broke out about Kimmich last fall after he confirmed in an interview that he had not been vaccinated.

He "personally still has a few concerns, especially with regard to the lack of long-term studies," says Kimmich.

His decision caused an enormous stir at a time when Germany was already discussing an insufficient vaccination rate.

Last but not least, SPD politician and current Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach made a comprehensive statement - and even offered Kimmich vaccination information.

A month later, FC Bayern Munich* announced that Kimmich had tested positive for the corona virus.

The result: lung problems and a longer forced break.

In total, he missed six league games after two quarantines as an unvaccinated contact person and through his own infection.

In December he announced that he now wanted to be vaccinated.

In an interview with ZDF, he explained: "In general, it was just difficult for me to deal with my fears and concerns, which is why I was undecided for so long."

However, he also said that he had found the heated debate about his vaccination concerns "completely exaggerated and sometimes even dangerous".

"Boundaries were simply crossed." Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann then welcomed the fact that the player had made his rethinking public after weeks of silence.

"I think it's basically good that he spoke up, that he talked a bit about his feelings and thoughts," said the coach.

The 26-year-old Kimmich is currently not with the national team.

This is preparing for the upcoming international matches against Israel (March 26, 2022) and the Netherlands (March 29).
