Surprising decision:
Partizan Belgrade announced today (Thursday) its retirement from the continuation of the playoff games in the Serbian league, following the incidents of violence in the game against the Red Star earlier this week.
Rumors about the retirement of Yam Madar and Zeljko Oberdovic's team from the rest of the season have been circulating over the last few days in the local media, and today, as stated, the club issued an official announcement of the decision.
"All the games were full of incidents that endangered the safety of the players and coaches, which led to the partial and complete closure of the halls, many fines, and great embarrassment for Serbian and regional basketball in front of the whole world."
Throughout the series, partisan representatives did not hide their self-criticism.
Both President Ostoya Mayelovich and head coach Zeljko Oberdovic have publicly criticized the fans whom they described as "irresponsible" following their behavior.
"With the announcement of retirement, the club wants to convey the message that we do not want to be part of the hooligan celebrations - no matter if they are Red Star fans or partisans. At the same time, the club wants to try and solve all the problems for next season," the statement said.
