The Russian army's takeover of Ukraine this evening (Saturday) claimed another victim from the world of football, this time a familiar name to Israeli fans: According to reports, Maccabi Haifa former stopper Sergei Blanchuk was killed in shelling on the Bhumat in Donetsk region.
Blanchuk, who was reported in the local media that after retiring from active play he graduated with a law degree and worked as a lawyer, was drafted into the Ukrainian army last April.

The brakeman, 47 at the time of his death, came to Maccabi Haifa in 1996 after one season at Dynamo Kyiv, and wore the green uniform for two and a half years, during which time he was a partner in winning the state cup in 1998, even scoring one of the goals in the final against Hapoel Jerusalem.
After 72 appearances in all settings in the Maccabi Haifa uniform, Blanchuk continued to the daughter team of Dimo Kyiv, from which he moved to Verskala and before retiring he also played for Metalist Kharkiv.
