No one can take this experience away from her: Hannah Garreis from the LAG Mittlere Isar came eleventh in her first DM over 800 meters in Bremen.

Freising/Bremen

– Track and field athlete Hannah Garreis from the LAG Mittlere Isar looks back on her first German championships in the W15 age group in Bremen with mixed feelings.

The joy knew no bounds when at the beginning of June at the Rolf-Watter-Sportfest in Regensburg she clearly undercut the qualifying mark of 2:22.20 minutes over the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.13 minutes.

With this best performance of the season and a look at the list of participants in Bremen, there was definitely a chance of reaching the DM final, which the 15-year-old Freisinger also set as a goal for this competition.

That it didn't work out in the end?

From gymnast to track and field athlete

Before Hannah established herself in the running scene, she was active as a gymnast in Unterföhring.

However, she had to end her gymnastics career after seven years due to severe back pain - so the ambitious student looked for a new sport.

“My brother actually got me into athletics.

He was a successful javelin thrower and always enjoyed the sport, so I wanted to try it too.”

Said and done!

First, Hannah trained in all disciplines, before trainer Francisco Munoz recognized her great running talent and accepted her into his group in 2020.

Since then, five training sessions have been on the weekly program, with competitions added on the weekends, especially in summer.

Even if she has already found her favorite discipline with the 800 meters, she does not want to commit to a specific route: "The 1500 meters, but also the sprint distances of 100 meters to 400 meters, are a lot of fun for me." Munoz therefore also sends them on all shorter distances into the race.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

“I didn't expect to qualify for the German championships this year.

My season started too bumpy for that,” says Hannah Garreis.

After a corona infection in the spring, other health problems followed.

Regular training was out of the question at the time.

"Hannah took it all very professionally for her young age - she's never lacking in ambition anyway.

She more than deserves the fact that she was able to fulfill her dream with the German Championships," said coach Francisco Munoz in praise of his protégé.

In the end, Hannah Garreis lacked the necessary grains

Together with her father, Hannah made her way to Bremen.

Munoz had to pass due to health reasons.

"Of course it's always nice when my coach is there.

He just knows what I'm capable of and motivates me best.

When I got into the stadium, I just wanted to run my race,” she says of her impressions on Saturday.

The anticipation was great, the goal was set.

Nevertheless, in the end it wasn't enough to take part in the final, which she had wanted so much.

“At 1:20 minutes, we just started the first lap too slowly.

Every runner held back, none of them wanted to push the pace.” After 400 meters, the competition started the final sprint.

“I was able to keep up with them for a long time, but I had to let go with 120 meters to go – I didn’t have the strength there.

You can tell that I'm lacking in training and that I'm not in the best of health.” With a time of 2:26.56 minutes, she took eleventh place in the semifinals.

However, Hannah sees the whole thing very positively: “I did my best.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out in the final, but I'm still satisfied with my performance.

I'm just glad I was there.

Hannah now wants to attack the Bavarians

The woman from Freising doesn't have enough for this season: At the Bavarian championships at the end of July, she wants to attack her personal best of 2:18.94 minutes again and get involved in the awarding of medals.

After that, the running shoes are stowed away for a well-deserved family vacation.

"I use the vacation as a training break to get away from running a bit and devote myself to other things like hiking or crocheting."
