Driving under the influence of alcohol with 2.37 per thousand: Mehlem has to pay 12,000 euros and is not allowed to drive for four months

On Tuesday, Mehlem was charged with drunk driving in front of the district court in Königstein im Taunus. The background to the appointment was that, according to information from Bild, the lily director is said to have driven his car through the posh town of Kronberg near Frankfurt on the evening of September 21, 2020. He had been stopped by police officers. During a subsequent check, they had found an alcohol level of 2.37 per thousand in the blood of the Darmstadt professional.

Now the case has been heard before the Königsstein district court and the sentence for the 26-year-old has also been announced. In addition to a hefty fine of 12,000 euros, Mehlem has to give up his driver's license for four months.

"Lilies" star Mehlem explains driving under the influence of alcohol: "I was in a bubble full of false friends"

According to Bild, Mehlem explained his trip to the court on Tuesday as follows: "I was in a bubble full of false friends who wanted to make a name for themselves. When I moved to Darmstadt, I was alone for the first time in my life," he said, who left his home town of Karlsruhe for the first time as a 2017-year-old in 19 when he moved to the Böllenfalltor. "Without my parents, new city – I became a follower who wanted to belong. That's how alcohol consumption came about," he admitted openly and honestly.

"It was due to the social environment," said Mehlem, who had already been deprived of his driver's license for a month in 2019 as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol and who subsequently sought professional help, according to Bild. The judge in charge, Dr. Philipp Hess, also noted this attitude in the Darmstadt professional. Mehlem, who missed only two of a possible 32 games this season due to a yellow card and was otherwise always in Torsten Lieberknecht's starting eleven, had shown "remorse and insight", Hess said at the meeting.

Immediately after the announcement of the verdict on Tuesday, his club struck a similar tone to the judge: "Marvin Mehlem informed us immediately of the private incident at the time and showed himself to be remorseful and insightful," said the sporting director of the "Lilies", Carsten Wehlmann, in a statement on Twitter behind the former Karlsruher.

The person in charge of Darmstadt immediately ticked off the matter: "We then dealt with the issue internally accordingly and closed it for ourselves." Consequently, it is to be expected that Mehlem will return to Lieberknecht's starting eleven on Friday evening for the home game against 1. FC Magdeburg after his second yellow card, because of which he had to sit out Sunday's 2-96 defeat at Hannover 1 - and possibly make the promotion with the "Lilies" perfect. Most recently, SV Darmstadt had given away two match points to return to the Bundesliga. (wuc)
