Head of the Women's Union: Widmann-Mauz calls for more female candidates on list places

So far, the CDU is one of the parties with the fewest female members. Annette Widmann-Mauz wants to promote women more strongly now: With a zipper procedure, that places places in equal numbers.

Women are a minority in politics. This is what the state elections recently showed again. In the state parliaments of Saxony and Brandenburg, there are significantly fewer women after the elections. One of the reasons is that conservative and right-wing populist parties are strongly represented there: they traditionally have a lower proportion of female members. The head of the Women's Union, Annette Widmann-Mauz (CDU), wants to see women more represented in the politics of their party.

She has therefore called on the CDU to establish more women on candidate lists. "The goal is half-half," she told the "Rheinische Post". "For list places, we need a zipper procedure, according to which the lists are bindingly filled in half by women - equally in front, middle and back seats."

Necessary is a "mandatory minimum requirement". The one-third women's quorum introduced by the CDU in 1996 was "seen by many as a non-binding upper limit on women's participation" and was therefore "out of date", criticized the Christian Democrat.

Widmann-Mauz also claims to be able to imagine financial incentives to promote the formation of women. "For example, there could be additional funding if a national association meets the targets for women's recruitment," she said. Whether such models are also possible in the public party financing, could explore a Bundestag commission.

Other parties have already introduced regulations to promote women. The Greens and the Left, for example, fill their electoral lists in equal numbers.
