The theme of the day: U-turn in the US Middle East policy

The US government no longer sees any violation of international law in Israeli settlements in the West Bank. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday in Washington. (See the explanation in the video here). It is another important U-turn in the US Middle East policy.

Under President Donald Trump, the country has already moved its embassy to Jerusalem and recognized the affiliation of the annexed Golan Heights to Israel. Now Washington has finally put itself on the side of the strongest in the conflict. As a mediator between Israelis and Palestinians, the US will be out of action for the time being, analyzes my colleague Dominik Peters.

Trump was able to send a message to Europe with his decision. And to promote the favor of the local pro-Israel evangelicals. With her help, he wants to be re-elected next year.

The decision comes at a time when Israel is in a political crisis. After Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a government, this Wednesday also runs out of deadline for his adversary Benny Gantz. Should he also fail, threaten the third election within a year.

In the event of re-election, Netanyahu has already made plans for the West Bank that could further endanger the peace process. Here you can read more about it.

The number of the day: 19 tons

This number corresponds to the maximum permissible weight on the bridge, which collapsed on Monday in Toulouse, France. Now the evidence of the cause of the congestion is condensing: Perhaps a truck that was more than twice as heavy as allowed caused the collapse. The accident killed two people.
