The topic of the day: dispute over NATO
Actually, in about a month in London, a jubilee should be appreciated on a grand scale. NATO celebrates its 70th anniversary at a summit. But today it has become clear how bad the mood in the Western military alliance is.
French President Emmanuel Macron gave the alliance a catastrophic testimony: "What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO." There is "no coordination in strategic decisions between the US and its NATO allies." He was referring to the Turkish military offensive against the Kurds in northern Syria. The Americans seemed to "turn their backs on European partners."
Angela Merkel immediately distanced herself from Macron's comments: "Such a sweeping blow is not necessary," she said at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
The NATO also caused a dispute in the Federal Government: For Finance Minister Olaf Scholz Minister of Defense Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer the goal of the government program to increase defense spending to two percent of gross domestic product.
US President Donald Trump has been accusing Germany of low military spending for a long time. Kramp-Karrenbauer campaigned for a reorientation of German foreign and security policy. She also justified the demanded increase in defense expenditures with the fact that "the will and the strength" in the USA are currently weakening to make disproportionate contributions to international security.
What does Mike Pompeo say? The US Secretary of Defense is in Germany for two days.
The number of the day: 73
Now everything is counted: The FDP was in the state election in Thuringia 73 votes above the pause clause, and thus managed quite, very close to the Parliament.
