More than 400,000 cases of new coronavirus have been officially declared worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to a count made by AFP from official sources Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. GMT.

At least 401,285 cases of infection, including 18,040 deaths, were recorded in 175 countries and territories, in particular in China (81,171 cases, of which 3,277 died), the cradle of the pandemic, and in Italy (69,176 cases), the most hard hit in number of deaths with 6,820 dead. The number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries now testing only those cases requiring hospital care.
