Local and legislative elections in Serbia, postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, will finally be held in June, President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Monday. The two ballots, scheduled for April 26, were postponed in mid-March when Serbia declared a state of emergency and instituted a curfew to combat the spread of Covid-19.

"The legislative and local elections will be held on June 21," said Aleksandar Vucic after a meeting with the leaders of the political parties who will take part in it. The form that the electoral campaign will take remains to be determined, but due to the epidemic, "it is practically certain that there will be no (electoral) rallies in May, in any case no large-scale rallies and in enclosed spaces , said Aleksandar Vucic.

Serbia began Monday to lift some of the restrictions it has put in place to combat the spread of the coronavirus, allowing the opening of cafes and restaurants and the resumption of public transport.

The government announced Monday that it will propose to parliament that it lift the state of emergency and the curfew, which is in effect from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. local time. This could end on Thursday. Authorities have identified more than 9,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, causing less than 200 deaths. A decrease in new cases and new deaths has been observed in recent days.
