False posts on networks suggest that the candidate read from a teleprompter. Actually, Biden was watching a monitor with a viewer on it.

By Samantha Putterman - Politifact

Presidential candidate Joe Biden sat down for an interview with Noticias Telemundo journalist José Díaz-Balart and promised that, if elected, he would stop deportations of immigrants during the first 100 days of his presidency.

Post-show, a clip of the interview has been shared on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, with the false suggestion that Biden was reading a previously written response to one of the questions, possibly from a

teleprompter

.

The misleading post notes that Biden said in the middle of his response: "I lost that line."

That is not what happened.

The posts that spread that lie were flagged by Facebook, as part of its efforts to combat fake news and misinformation on its wall.

The full video from the Sept. 15 interview shows that Biden is not looking at a

teleprompter

, but instead

responded to a question from a Telemundo viewer appearing on a monitor.

Around minute 8:50 of the video, the woman is seen on the screen asking the question before the camera turns to Biden for her answer.

The question was, "Mr. Biden, you and Obama are responsible for the deportation of a record number of immigrants. How can you guarantee that this will not continue to happen in our communities?"

Biden responded, as he seemed to

look at the woman in the monitor: "We took too long to get

it right That is the truth and point Number one Number two, but ... compared to where we are today, and see who you are....

¿ How do you feel today in terms of this president?

Everything he has done, separating thousands ... there are still thousands of people who are being separated from their families. They are deporting people out of the church, waiting for them when they leave after the Mass. There will be no deportations in the first 100 days of my campaign, "he said.

Díaz-Balart then steps in to confirm that Biden would freeze the deportations.

When he does, Biden turns his gaze to him and the camera returns to Diaz-Balart as the Democratic nominee begins to respond: "Freeze deportations for the first 100 days," says Biden.

The camera then focuses on Biden, who appears to have turned his head again in the direction of the woman on the monitor

, as he says, "And the only people who will be deported are the people who committed a crime while they were here. That's the number. one. Ok. I lost that (lady) ... ".

Telemundo communications director Kevin Gray told PolitiFact that the moment some attributed Biden to saying, "I lost that line," the Democratic candidate actually said, "I lost that lady."

The monitor the woman appeared on when she asked the prerecorded question went blank as Biden responded, prompting the candidate to say he "lost" it.

"Mr. Diaz-Balart responded by saying 'You and I can talk about it,' so Vice President Biden would direct his response to him, as the screen had gone black," Gray said.

The monitor was only there for the purpose of allowing Telemundo viewers to ask Biden questions, he said:

"At no point during the interview did Vice President Biden use a teleprompter, nor read any of his responses, and they were not provided to him. you ask ahead of time

, ”Gray explained.

Noticias Telemundo also denied on Twitter the suggestion that Biden had read a response.

“Recent social media posts claiming that Joe Biden used a

telepromter

during his interview with journalist José Díaz-Balart and Noticias Telemundo are absolutely false.

Noticias Telemundo has never allowed any interviewee in its news programs to read its responses from a

telepromter

, which would constitute a clear violation of its editorial policies and practices, ”the company wrote.

The claim circulating on social media about Biden

is false
