Family vacation: finally some time for me. And now?

I took a vacation from the family. But can I still do that: be alone? Three lessons I've learned about myself.

There is a child's photo of me, there I stand as a kid in the garden and look happily into nothing.

In the album, which was still classic with photo corners and such, I wrote under the picture in a creepy children's font: "Finally alone".

I probably wanted to be funny as one of five siblings: because there was no such thing as being alone.

Not even in the confessional on Good Friday.

Five children per family was something like the average in our village back then.

With less one was practically barren or punished by God, more was not a problem either, more a question of space.

Being alone was somehow not an option, not at home, not on the street, it was teeming with children, not even on vacation, we drove to the state-subsidized hostels for large families in the Harz or Sauerland and met who?

Exactly, more packs.

Markus Deggerich

, 50, is the patchwork dad of five children between the ages of 2 and 17.

He works part-time, hopes for a career in the kitchen and watches with amazement as his children and the best woman in the world answer life's big and small questions for him.

I haven't learned to be alone, but I've always enjoyed it very much, as an adult I always like to travel solo, then felt more open to new and new things, didn't have to agree with anyone: let yourself go, enjoy the moment.

Carpe Diem.

Genius loci.

In vino veritas.

Lonesome stranger.

Oh.
