The bicycle could be a real alternative to the car in everyday life, even in rural areas.

30 percent of the routes for which citizens usually start the car are between one and five kilometers long.

"If we manage to shift some of the vehicle traffic to the bike, we have already won," is Matthias Reintjes' conviction.

The traffic planner from the Kaulen city and traffic planning office presented details from the Ammer-Lech-Land cycling concept at the latest Schongau city council meeting.

In addition to the concept of an everyday cycle path network in the district, the areas of the municipalities of Altenstadt, Peiting and Schongau were also examined more closely.

Citizens also submitted their ideas at a workshop.

The proposals contained in the list of measures run across the entire city of Schongau.

Sometimes only signage is missing, sometimes marking would help.

But a lot of construction work also has to be tackled: "Poor quality of the cycle paths means that the bike is often left standing - even for short distances," says Reintjes.

Problem of speed

According to him, the greatest safety is provided by the separation of bicycle traffic from pedestrian paths and road traffic.

The difficulty in planning is now also the speed of the wheels.

You have to find a solution that fits the rusty bike as well as the high-end speed bike or the cargo bike.

The Schongau cycle network is designed as a ring structure.

These paths should be improved, crossings and junctions should be expanded.

Another challenge in Schongau is, unsurprisingly, the extensive bypass of the Lechberg.

The concept does not offer a simple solution for this; additional investigations are necessary for this outer ring, according to the traffic planner.

Feasibility study proposed

Another focus of the measures is the cycle path in the direction of Peiting to Loamer Stichl.

In the current state, the planning office rates the route between the train station and the intersection at the Märchenwald as “highly critical”.

There are now plans by the State Building Authority, the city of Schongau and the market town of Peiting.

For ideas such as an additional bicycle bridge over the Lech, the office suggests a feasibility study.

A third important point of the cycle path concept is the connection of the old town from the south.

In addition, “innovative solutions” would have to be sought for the cycle path on the southern Lechumlaufberg.

This is difficult because of the height differences.

Reintjes could imagine projects like a kind of bicycle lift.

Approach minor measures immediately

A long list emerges from all investigations, and a priority plan has also been drawn up.

A cycle path on Hollberg is marked in red as “urgently needed”.

Urgent measures are recommended for Marktoberdorfer Straße, namely for the Rösslekellerberg all the way up to the first roundabout, the connection from the second roundabout to the west is also marked as "urgent".

The northern ring from the school center roundabout to the train station, on the other hand, is not recommended by the planners for cycling.

The members of the city council had a few comments, but unanimously approved the cycle path concept.

This means that the plans should be taken into account in future construction work.

Priority plan and information on the homepage

Schongau's city architect Sebastian Dietrich was delighted in an interview with Schongauer Nachrichten that this important planning step has now been completed.

However, he also pointed out that the city is not a building contractor everywhere.

"So we have to look at all the projects individually and coordinate them if necessary." However, an annual budget of 50,000 euros should be available for the immediate implementation of smaller improvements.

At the same time, problem areas should be tackled.
