OUHK President Huang Yushan, Academic Vice President Guan Qingping, Vice President (Resources and Development) Lu Ruhan, and University Rename Selection Committee Secretary Liang Ruzhao, held a press conference today (11th) to announce the new name of the university as "The Metropolitan University of Hong Kong".



Huang Yushan said that the Open University Council started the renaming work about two years ago. After consulting people inside and outside the school, it collected more than 1,100 suggestions for the new school name, 49% of which came from the public and 26% from alumni and students. 22 % Is from OUHK faculty.

After three rounds of selection by the committee, three choices were selected in November. After consulting with language experts, the school board discussed the three proposals and unanimously decided to adopt the "Hong Kong Metropolitan University".

Vice President (Resources and Development) Lu Ruhan said that the new school name was only approved by the Board of Trustees yesterday. In fact, the Legislative Council must pass the university regulations before the new school name can be used.

Until the new name is formally adopted, the university will continue to use the name "The Open University of Hong Kong".
