On June 14, 2020 Sarah Hegazi decided to put an end to her life.
At the time of her death, the Egyptian human rights activist was 30 years old.
Two years ago she had sounded increasingly gloomy in interviews: “The prison killed me.
It destroyed me, «said Hegazi in an interview with the US radio station NPR in June 2018.
In the conversation, she told of how she was arrested after a concert by a Lebanese band with a gay singer.
Back then she waved a rainbow flag in front of the stage.
Hegazi was later accused, among other things, of joining an illegal group and promoting "sexual deviations".
She was tortured and mentally ill-treated while in detention.
She spent the last months of her life in exile in Canada.
The news of her death caused horror worldwide.
In the Arab world it became a symbol of the dangerous situation that homosexuals are exposed to because of their sexual orientation alone.
