The president, Donald Trump, sent a farewell message to the American people this Thursday afternoon, when there are less than 24 hours left for the official transfer of power to take place in Washington and Joe Biden replaces him as president of the nation.
"This week we inaugurate a new Administration and pray for its success in keeping America safe and prosperous," Trump said in the statement, which was characterized by a triumphalist tone and a promise of return.
"We did what we came here to do, and much more," he said.
"I took on the toughest battles, the toughest fights, the toughest decisions,
because that's what they chose me for."
"I want you to know that the movement we started is just beginning," he said.
It is unclear if, after the second impeachment trial the tycoon faces in the Senate, he will be allowed to run for elected office.
"Our agenda was not about the right or the left, it was not about Republicans or Democrats, but about the good of a nation, and that means the entire nation," he added.
"We have reaffirmed the sacred idea that in the United States the government responds to the people," he said almost two weeks after his followers violently stormed the headquarters of Congress in Washington DC, after more than a month of falsely telling them that the Democrats had "Stolen" the election.
"Yes, all Americans were horrified by the assault on our Capitol. Political violence is an attack on everything that we hold dear as Americans. It can never be tolerated," Trump said.
