- The great sights of nature are not to be found in the world's metropolises, but mostly completely hidden in places where they are not at all expected. One such area is the hill spring moor near Giesenbach: this is where endangered plants of European importance are at home. With one of two annual mowing operations, the landscape maintenance association not only wants to maintain this pearl, but even expand the meadow areas. This requires hard work, a sure instinct and a large portion of patience.

The pearl in the bog is a grassy area that is almost completely surrounded by tall reeds. The endangered orchid species marsh stendrums grows here and is rated 3 on the Red List of Plants. The plant is endangered and migrates to stage 2 (critically endangered) or later 1 (critically endangered) if nothing changes. The orchid species, together with fever clover and cotton grass, form a trio of endangered plant species. At this point, the marsh stendelwort, with around 100 plants, is by far the largest occurrence in the Freising district. Fabian Eichhorn, project manager at the Landscape Management Association, emphasizes the importance of this moor in the area of the municipality of Kranzberg: “This is an FFH area of European importance.“A hill spring moor like the one at Giesenbach is likely to be the largest and most important in the Upper Bavaria district. The task of the landscape conservation association is to mow the reeds so that over time they do not conquer the green space of the valuable plants. In the beginning, they approached once a year and found that this would not stop the reeds from spreading. Since then there has been double mowing in summer and autumn. Fabian Eichhorn shows that the plant area has been increased by a few meters since then and that the reeds are being pushed a little further. This time the reeds were removed a few meters further in a larger area, which was hard work for the half dozen students at the Technical University of Munich and for the volunteers. "We now want to establish the marsh stendelwort in this area," says Eichhorn. The project manager has a second pearl in mind with rare plants in the bog area. These measures are only possible because the Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the Hackenjos Foundation contribute financially to the maintenance measures.

The municipality of Kranzberg inherited the land from the former municipality of Gremertshausen during the regional reform. This is a two-hectare biotope and three hectares of forest. The mayor of the community, Hermann Hammerl, attended the mowing action as the property owner and bought the helpers a snack. In the long term, the landscape conservation association would like to bring the farmers of the neighboring fields on board. High-quality compensation areas could be created here, for example for the construction of new motorways or railways. The landscape maintenance association would mediate this and the farmer would receive compensation for not being allowed to cultivate the compensation areas adjoining the biotope.
