Gedaliah's fast marks the first famous political assassination that took place in the State of Israel.
The day after Rosh Hashanah, on Tuesday, Tishrei (September 9, 2021), traditionalists fast from morning to evening and are not allowed to eat or drink.
This day is also the first day of the "terrible days" between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
The fast was set to mark the assassination of Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the governor of Judah after the destruction of the First Temple, by Ishmael son of Netanya.
The assassination ended the Jewish autonomy in the Land of Israel after the destruction of the house and the Jews who were in the area were widespread.
Only seventy years later, with the return of Zion, Jewish settlement in the country resumed.
In contrast to Tisha B'Av and Yom Kippur, during the Gedaliah fast it is permissible to bathe and perfume as well as to work.
It is forbidden to eat or drink from dawn until the stars come out.
At the same time, in case of illness there are reliefs for fasting on this day.
This year the fast falls on Monday (September 21, 2020).
